7 Ways To Save Money on Clothes
Shop your closet
When you hear the term “shop your closet” it might sound boring, but in actuality it’s really fun and has a lot of benefits. One of my favorite benefits of shopping your closet is that it allows you to get a lot of wear out of each garment. This allows you to get your money’s worth and the full value out of each item before you have to toss it for good. Applying this strategy over a period of time also temporarily frees up your clothes shopping budget allowing you to use the excess cash on whatever you need.
Plan Out Your Purchases
Planning out your purchases can help you save money and give you more visibility inside your closet. To successfully plan out your purchases, you’ll need to set an hour or so aside to go through your closet. While you’re in there, take notes on what you have the most of, what you have the least of, what areas of your wardrobe you need to refresh, and what needs to be repaired/donated. Once that information has been gathered, choose how much you want to spend on clothes shopping for the month (or the next few months) along with dates where you have the most free time to shop.
Take Care of Your Clothes
One of my favorite ways to save money on clothes is by taking care of them. Some of my favorite ways to take care my garments is by using leather balm to keep my leather looking fresh and brand new, washing my clothes in vegan laundry liquid to keep them looking bright and sparkling clean, spot cleaning my clothes with stain remover to get rid of unattractive stains, and using a clothing brush in between wears to keep my clothes looking polished! Caring for your clothes can feel overwhelming, especially when you have a million other things to do, but once you start incorporating clothing care into your weekly routine it will become much easier to manage (this is coming from someone that has a million other things to do!).
Wear All of Your Clothes
We live in a world where we do a lot of consuming. In fact, did you know the average US consumer throws away 81.5 pounds of clothes every year (according to earth.org)? By making sure that you wear every single piece of clothing in your closet you are saving yourself hundreds of dollars per year. I’m sure you want to know how all of this money is being saved so let me explain. When you make the conscious decision to start wearing all of the clothing in your closet you’re able to create a wider variety of outfits, decrease the wear and tear that comes with repeating the same outfits, and you limit the urge of wanting to impulse buy because you’ll be keeping your mind busy with creating new outfit combinations.
Don’t Overlaunder Your Clothing
As children, we observed our parents washing our clothes every time we wore them and overtime we adapted that same mindset. However, washing your clothes after each wear is not the proper way to care for them (I’m sure your head is spinning right now. I was the same way when I learned this as well!). Washing your clothes frequently, hence every time you wear them, puts strain on the clothing and causes it to wear down faster. So instead of washing your clothes after each wear, a good rule of thumb is to wear your clothing at least three times in between washes. Of course this number will increase or decrease depending on the garment but typically three times is just enough.
Select Quality Fabrics
Selecting quality fabrics is one of the best things you can do to save money on your wardrobe. Quality fabrics not only make your outfits look better and last longer, but they also have great health benefits as well. In fact, clothing made with quality materials can protect you from dirt and pollutants that could irritate your skin or cause respiratory issues. Two of my personal favorites are cotton and linen (which are perfect for wearing year around!) but other fabrics like silk, leather, and denim are great choices as well. If you’re new to shopping for quality clothing and need a helping hand, then take a look at our collection. Most of the pieces in there are not only stylish, but quality and sustainable as well!
Repair Your Clothes (As Needed)
Often times when we have a shirt that’s missing a button or a piece of clothing that has a hole we’re quick to want to toss it or replace it. Instead, the best (and most cost effective) option is to repair the item as soon as you notice it. If you aren’t as skilled in this area you might want to seek the help of a professional tailor. However, if you have time to spare and want to save some money you can watch free videos on YouTube to learn how to mend the defects yourself.
How have these tips improved your finances?
I’m eager to know how these tips have impacted your finances. I’ve applied all of them and it has made such a huge difference for me. Since switching to this method, I don’t shop a lot throughout the year so I’m able to place that shopping money else wear like in investments and beautiful home décor.
