How To Make a Short Dress More Modest
The Prelude
Let’s be honest, short dresses are cute but they’re not always practical for work, certain social events, or religious beliefs. However, that doesn’t stop us from wanting to purchase them. In fact, it usually makes us want to purchase them more! The good news is that you can purchase them without the guilt of feeling exposed (you just need to apply the tips that I’m about to share with you). Before we begin, I want to remind you not to go against your employers dress code policy. Unless they specifically state that short dresses are permitted in the workplace, please don’t go making your own rules. Now that we’ve addressed that, let’s dive into some tips!
How To Make a Short Dress More Modest
Add a long cardigan to your outfit.
Adding a long cardigan or duster to your outfit really helps with balancing out the look. This mainly happens because the cardigan acts as a layering piece and is typically the first thing that people notice when they take a look at your outfit. It’s also a huge help for curvier women and women with thicker thighs, because it keeps the butt covered (in case your dress starts to rise up) and it moves the focal point from the hips and thighs to the cardigan. If you want to see an example of what this looks like when implemented, take a look at this video that I created.
Layer with Leggings or Tights
Leggings and tights are a great way to make short dresses more modest and fashion forward. Leggings tend to dress an outfit up and down depending on how you style them, they help keep you warm which is perfect for colder months, and if you have larger thighs they prevent them from rubbing together. Tights on the other hand add a more mature and attractive feel to the dress while still maintaining a classy and fashion forward appearance. Both options are great to wear to work, for a night out, and they can also be worn comfortably majority of the year.
Pair with Knee or Thigh Length Boots
Knee and thigh length boots aren’t only cute but they’re a great way to offset a short dress. Much like the cardigan strategy that we went over earlier, knee and thigh length boots act as a statement piece that draws the viewers eye to the boots before the rest of the outfit. When implemented correctly, people will hardly notice the length of your dress because the boots will steal the show! For a double dose of modesty try pairing your boots with tights or leggings.
If It Makes Sense For Your Outfit Include A Hat
Hats are a fantastic way to add some modesty to your outfit. This simple accessory draws most of the attention to your face rather than the length of your dress. It works well with both flowy and fitted dresses and can be paired with any of the strategies above to create the ultimate modest outfit. Feel free to experiment with different colors and styles, but keep in mind that a wide brimmed hat will always get the job done!
Opt For Looser Silhouettes
If you haven’t started purchasing short dresses yet I want to recommend that you look into shorter ones with looser fits. Doing this will give you an advantage when dressing modestly and you’ll have far less changes to make. Should your dress be a little too loose for your liking, feel free to belt it around the waist for a more fitted look. Additionally, the belt will also act as a statement piece and draw attention away from the length of the dress so it ends up being a double win for you!
