Style Exclusive: How To Dress Up As A Youtuber with @NessaKaii

The Prelude

Okay guys so this is my first ever blog interview and it was a fun one to say the least. I was able to catch up with New York native @NessaKaii to chat about fashion, style, faith, and of course her amazing YouTube channel. Outside of YouTube, you may recognize this talented beauty from the Styled by Breyana showroom, advertisements, and social media posts. To put it simply, she is a woman of many talents and is just as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. Let’s dive into her exclusive interview below and see what kind of tips, wisdom, and fashion secrets she has for all of you new YouTubers out there.

Highlight video: This video shows where I was in the beginning of my journey to where I’m at now. With anything that you do, you have to start somewhere. It may not be perfect in the beginning but overtime, you begin to craft and perfect your work. It takes time and it won’t happen overnight. It’s like how the saying goes, “practice makes perfect.”

Style Exclusive: How To Dress Up As A YouTuber with @NessaKaii

Tell us your name and give us some insight on what you do.

Hey guys! I’m Nessa and I’m a Registered Nurse and YouTuber.

What inspired you to start your YouTube channel and get into the beauty/fashion space?

Originally, I started YouTube because I wanted to get out of my comfort zone. I am a person who does not like to be in front of the camera or take photos. Growing up, I kept to myself and I was such an introvert. Last year I decided to change that about myself. I wanted to open up more and feel more confident in myself. What better way to do that than with YouTube! I started off my channel doing protective styling because that is what I am good at and I thought that starting a YouTube channel sharing my tips and tricks can help someone.

Did you think your channel would be successful so quickly?

Honestly, I didn’t. Before I started my videos, I prayed and asked God to let my videos reach people around the world and let it be a blessing to them. To see how far I’ve gotten with my channel, it’s all thanks to God. I am grateful and thankful to each of my subscribers and to read encouraging comments on my videos is such a blessing to me.

I really love that you include a Bible verse at the beginning of each of your videos. What inspired that creative idea?

I love this question! Scriptures helped me in my walk with God. If I feel sad or lonely or need strength, I read the word of God to renew my faith and to help me in my life. I decided that with each video, I would include a scripture to bring an encouraging word to someone who needs it. I don’t know who may watch my video but I do pray that these scriptures will resonate in their hearts and let them know that God loves them, no matter who they are or what they are going through.

Give us an exclusive behind the scenes look on creating your content. What are some things that we don’t see?

Some things you don’t see is the amount of times I would record a video. If the lighting is not right or if I mess up, I would restart it over from the beginning! I take pride in what I do and the content that I create. I want to put out great videos and continually set expectations for myself. Also the editing takes a long time (laughs). A 45 minute unedited video can turn into a 10 minute edited video. I have to admit, editing is not my favorite thing to do but I’m working on getting better at it.

As you know fashion is important to me so I have to ask. Do you feel like fashion and image play an important role as a YouTuber? Why or why not?

Yes I definitely believe that fashion and image play an important role. In a world full of social media, there’s a certain aesthetic that is being portrayed, such as an “IG model/IG baddie.” While there is nothing wrong with that, I rarely see positive portrayals of plus size women. I want to change that narrative and be able to relate to women of all shapes and sizes. For me personally, I used to compare myself to the society image of a woman and that took a toll on my mental health. I would read Genesis 1:27 and remember that God created us to stand out and not blend in. We are all unique and beautiful in our own way and we should not conform to the image society has placed on us.

What’s one of your favorite pieces to wear in your videos and why?

In terms of clothing, I would say anything that accentuates my body and style. I tend to wear more muted/neutral colors but I do plan on wearing more colorful pieces. One step at a time! In terms of jewelry, I would definitely say my nose ring (laughs). I love how this piece of jewelry is simple yet elegant.

What words of encouragement can you give to aspiring YouTubers in the beauty and fashion space?

Be yourself! It’s okay to get inspiration from others but create your own identity and style. People will say whatever they want but don’t allow that to deter you from what you want to do. Be happy with who you are and what you create.

Besides YouTube, what other platforms can we use to follow your journey?

I am on Instagram.
