How To Plan Your Outfits For The Week
The Prelude
I’m not sure if you know this, but outfit planning is the key to looking well put together everyday! Other benefits of outfit planning include: gaining more visibility into your closet so you know what to shop for (and what not to shop for) and getting more value out of your wardrobe (your cost per wear is going to skyrocket by implementing an outfit planning strategy!). I’m sure all of this sounds exciting to you and you want to get started like right now. So below I put together some tips to help set you up for a successful outfit planning session. Check them out below!
How To Plan Your Outfits For The Week
Invest in pens and an outfit planner. When cooking it’s essential to get your tools ready and prep your food before you begin making the meal. With outfit planning it’s no different. To keep yourself organized and motived you’ll need to invest in pens and an outfit planner. When it comes to pens I typically use the basic black ones, but if you want to get festive you can use one color (let’s just say teal) for the weekends and black for the weekdays. When it comes to planners I love using this one because it has writing prompts to help limit how much I have to think (I’m an entrepreneur that makes tons of decisions each day. I don’t need to do it in my down time too!) and it has coaching tips to help motivate me along the way (it’s like having my own little personal stylist in my head plus it makes the planning session a little more fun!).
Choose a planning day. Before you start getting into the hustle and bustle of planning your outfits, it’s important to select a day where you’ll do all of your planning. For most people this tends to fall on the weekend (with Sunday being the most popular day), but for you it could be a Tuesday or a Wednesday. Once you select a day that works seamlessly with your schedule, you’ll want to make sure that you are showing up consistently every week for at least four weeks, so you can make planning your outfits a new habit. If you have trouble with staying consistent then feel free to lean on me for help. Not only am I an expert at outfit planning, but I offer a gentle yet intense accountability coaching service to help keep you on track and committed to your style goals.
Block out time for a planning session. Selecting a planning day is only half the battle. What separates the consistent planners from the inconsistent planners is committing to a specific time for planning. Committing to a specific time decreases your chances of procrastinating and ensures that you don’t let the day pass you by. It also allows you to focus solely on outfit planning without any interruptions or distractions. I recommend setting aside at least 1 hour and 30 minutes for your first four weeks of planning. However, when you start to get more comfortable and consistent with your planning sessions feel free to adjust the time to your liking and go from there.
Organize your closet. I’m sure you weren’t expecting this tip (it’s an odd one but it’s super important!). Organizing your closet is going to ensure that you’re able to find your clothing easily which will in turn help you create a smooth planning session. How you organize your closet is completely up to you, but it’s always best to group like items together so that they’re easier to pull for outfit curation.
Get to planning. Now that you’ve done the prep work, it’s time to start actually planning your outfits! The best advice that I can give to simplify your outfit planning is to try to make the most of one or two pieces throughout the week. For example, if you have a nice button up wear it with slacks one day, jeans the next day, and maybe let loose a little towards the end of the week and wear it unbuttoned with a nice pair of shorts. Using this strategy not only cuts down on decision making and the time that you spend planning, but it also ensures you get the most out of your wardrobe and that you touch every piece in your closet.
